The History and Development of the Harmony Hall
Harmony Hall is an 18th-century Georgian mansion located in Fort Washington, Maryland, that was built in 1769. The mansion has a rich and storied history, having been owned by several prominent figures throughout its existence. The first owner was Enoch Magruder, a wealthy landowner who served as a member of the Maryland General Assembly. He owned the mansion until 1783 when he sold it to Thomas Contee, a wealthy planter and member of the Maryland Constitutional Convention.
Harmony Hall was built in 1769 by Enoch Magruder, a prominent Maryland planter and politician, as a plantation house on a tract of over 1,300 acres. The house was later sold to the prominent Chase family in the early 19th century, and was eventually purchased by the National Park Service in the 1960s. Today, the house serves as a cultural center and art gallery, featuring rotating exhibits from local and national artists, as well as educational programs and events. In addition to the historic house, the grounds also include several acres of gardens and hiking trails, and is home to a variety of native plant and animal species. The park is open year-round and admission is free, making it an accessible and educational destination for visitors of all ages.
In 1832, the mansion was purchased by Dr. Gustavus Richard Brown, a physician and prominent figure in the local community. He renamed the property “Harmony Hall” and expanded the mansion, adding a second story, a two-story wing, and a front porch.
Throughout the years, the mansion was used for a variety of purposes, including as a hotel, a boarding house, and even as a speakeasy during the Prohibition era. In 1976, the mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, Harmony Hall serves as a cultural center, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the mansion’s rich history through historic tours and exhibits. The surrounding gardens and grounds provide a beautiful backdrop for outdoor events, and the mansion hosts a variety of performances and cultural events throughout the year.
